Why do I receive an error about files being open in another application?

Some document-related operations in ContactsLaw (e.g. deleting files after registration) will fail if the document is open in another application at the time. When one process (program) opens a file for reading, it is typically NOT permitted for other programs - including ContactsLaw - to modify or delete those files. In some circumstances, other programs may not even be allowed to open such files - however, some programs impose no such restriction on reading or writing to the file.

As a convenience measure, ContactsLaw prompts the user to retry or defer the operation in such cases, rather than simply cancelling out. Once you have closed the application in which the file is open, you can click 'Try again' to continue the operation. Alternatively, ContactsLaw can instruct the operating system to delete a particular file automatically the next time it starts up ('Delete later'). This prompt also includes a feature to identify which application(s) may be locking the file (if this is not apparent at the time).

To avoid this prompt, always ensure that you close other applications after you have finished reading or editing documents. If you continually experience problems related to file-locking, you can download an application called Process Explorer, which may assist in locating the source of the problem.
